I had a few minutes left at the end of my Digital8 camcorder tape, so I decided to use it up while playing a rather nice song from a generic "Jazz Combo" CD bought at a dollar store. Most of the tracks are rather boring and repetitive, but this one stands out with a catchy riff and high quality musicianship, especially from the drummer. I wish I could credit the composer and performers, but the CD is just labelled "DigiMusic Essentials Collection," by "DigiView Entertainment" of Dunellen, New Jersey. Unfortunately the tape ran out before the song ended, but it gets a little repetitive near the end anyway. I also used analog S-Video capture to transfer this footage into my computer, so you can see some of the Sony camcorder's neat information displays, including a real-time tally of the camera's adjustments as it was recording the video, including auto or manual exposure, shutter speed (usually 1/100, 1/90, or 1/60, automatically adjusted), white balance mode (always automatic on this model), aperture (usually F1.4 in indoor lighting), and video gain (which maxes out at 18 dB).

100% Ubuntu Linux : Using a DV Camcorder with Kino via a Firewire Connection

Most firewire and DV camcorders should be accessible via this method in Ubuntu. If not, you can obtain firewire cards compatible with Linux. Otherwise you will need a different DV camcorder that is compatible, but I haven't had any problems so far with both of my Desktop systems. In the first I bought a Dynex Firewire card, and that worked fine. In the later, Firewire was accessible via the Motherboard. As with most hardware on Ubuntu, it should just work, you should not need to go hunting down device dri.. What are device drivers? If Linux had device drivers, it would be possible to search for them and install them, but they are usually just compiled into the kernel, therefore the saying "it should just work". By the way, this video was a 300MB ogv file, straight from gtk-recordmydesktop. I then used oggconvert to reduce the file to 75MB, with a setting of V:5 and A:3 with almost no noticeable loss.. Unlike some video formats like mp4, ogg video (a open source, freeware) format is designed to handle both video encoding and screencasting. There is no equivalent on windows, I know, I used to screencast on Windows. You'd need a commercial codec, such as the one that comes with comtasia. Camstudio has one, but neither are as storage efficient as OGV. I used to do screencasting with MJPEG, which is probably the best codec for screencasting, but costs 25 dollars on the windows platform. Then I would use realvideo to compress the video down to something like 10 to 20 MB's.. I ...
